About Brighter Futures

Brighter Futures, a local charity supporting parents, families, young people in Jersey, has helped over 1,600 families comprising 5,000 plus islanders, since 2008. We work alongside the main carer using our educational model to provide them with the tools to cope. Supporting 150 local families at any one time we focus on three key areas:

Parent - child relationships, helping our clients recognise and value their role as their child's first and most important educator

Mental health and well - being programmes, which support social and emotional wellbeing, allowing increased resilience with the outside world to give our clients a brighter future and a hope.

Second chance learning programmes, providing the skills our clients may need in order to progress and succeed in education, work and life.

Balloons for Brighter Futures

Coronavirus has meant physical contact with our supporters and donors has become increasingly difficult as social distancing protocols have meant normal fundraising events are impossible. This has encouraged Brighter Futures to be far more proactive and creative towards virtual projects in order to continue supporting the 160 local families that we work with at any one time. And Rentaballoonrace.com, the world’s only virtual balloon race system, will be Brighter Futures’ first virtual event.

A virtual balloon race is a totally Internet based system, so there is no physical contact with charity supporters required at any point. The Balloons for Brighter Futures Race is a great fun 7day computer simulation race where everything is real except the balloon. Uniquely, the software uses current live weather data and is 100% eco-friendly, but still has the unpredictable nature of a real race and is just as competitive! All the virtual balloons can be personalised by decorating with colours, patterns and text plus tracked 24/7 on Google Maps and Satellites once the race is launched.

Once the virtual balloon race is launched, the actual prevailing weather conditions for the launch area on the day will be applied to all balloons. An advanced computer modelling programme using Google maps and weather data, will then track how each balloon reacts to the weather conditions during the race. A larger, more aerodynamic balloon may fly faster – but it is also at greater risk of exploding, if weather conditions deteriorate. Similarly, if the rubber selected is too thin, the air pressure within a balloon may make it burst too.

We hope this event will appeal to adults, children and young people alike.

Our Aim

Brighter Futures believe that a virtual balloon race is a wonderful thing to do while we are all in lockdown. People and communities can both come together virtually and, via their balloons, can travel the world virtually. Balloons for Brighter Futures will both ensure that our fundraising efforts continue and offer entertainment to those taking part too during this challenging time. Brighter Futures needs your help today more than ever, with the families we support facing a range of complex difficulties and challenges.

The onset of the Covid-19 pandemic has seen many clients’ situations deteriorate further, compounded by loss of income and the enforced social isolation leading to already challenging circumstances with many relationships becoming even more pressured and deteriorating.

All donations will be used to provide support not only for existing and returning clients, but also to the sharp increase of new referrals created during lockdown. Brighter Futures continue to accept new referrals on a daily-basis.

Jersey is a small island community, almost like a large family where each and every one of us has a role to play in being part of making a difference to build our community resilience and cohesion, now more than ever. This campaign was born out of the uncertain and difficult times we currently face.
